Jehovah's Witness 70, stripped of all privileges, jailed for historic sex abuse against his young stepdaughter prior to being a Witness. Nelson, New Zealand
by Sol Reform inhttp://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/9458000/man-70-jailed-for-historic-sex-abuse.
man, 70, jailed for historic sex abuse james greenland last updated 13:00 29/11/2013.
share a nelson man has been jailed for six years for historical sex offences against his young stepdaughter.the victim spoke in the nelson district court at the sentencing of stephen robert carter, 70, this week.. she described the deep psychological trauma she had lived with as an adult as a result of his controlling and manipulative sexual abuse in the family home.. she explained the difficulty of living under a "burden of secrecy", unable to tell anyone about what carter did to her because of the effect it would have on his high standing within the nelson jehovah's witness congregation.. carter had admitted seven charges, including representative charges of rape, sodomy, inducing a girl under 12 to do an indecent act, permitting a girl under 12 to do an indecent act on another male, and counts of committing an indecency with an animal, and being party to an indecency with an animal.. the court heard that carter converted to christianity about three years after ceasing the sexual abuse, which he initiated under the false pretence of sexual education when his stepdaughter was 10 and 11.. in one of the first instances of "grooming", carter showed the victim his semen under a microscope, the court heard.

Ok, now I know why you atheists get so spittin' mad at some believers.
by Julia Orwell incuz they feel like they're banging their heads against a wall.. i don't really fall into the category of atheist or believer, but i'll go where the facts lead me.
that generally leads to atheism, and is why atheists end up getting mad and therefore rude at believers: they will lay out facts, raise questions, play devil's advocate, and reason in an evidence-based, structured way.
i've seen it many times before on this forum.

Phizzy Said this......And I am afraid I disagree
by KateWild ini still find it strange that believers cannot get it in to their heads that atheism is not a belief, but theism is.
there cannot possibly be proof "for" the atheistic position as it is simply a position that says i see no proof for a god.. if someone says there are pink unicorns with purple spots and i say i have never seen any proof of their existence, i cannot offer proof of my "position", the onus is 100% upon the spotted unicorn guy to prove their existence to me.
simple.. where the frustration enters in for us non-unicornists is when the unicornists expect us to listen to inane arguments , non facts and plain nonsesnse and then go along with their delusion.

" Whilst the GB live till their 90's, CO's do not fare well."- JWfacts.
I've noticed that too. It's a strenous life. I've never heard of one alive or in good health by their mid 60s.

Make a bingo card of all the JW buzzwords: FDS, Governing Body, Last Days, Special Week of Activity, Channel, Food at the proper time...

How Jehovah's Witnesses benefit those humble enough to study the Bible with them.
by Stand for Pure Worship inexcellent material can be found within the reasoning book, page 328, para.2, 3. occasionally, i see posters make presumptuous comments like, "all you need is the bible", or, "i'm born-again, so there's no need for spiritual assistance from another christian", or,"i'm saved", or my favorite, "jesus talks to me directly.
" on one hand, i can't be overly critical of such ones because they do attempt to read and understand the bible on their own.
(acts 17:11) not to mention they're generally peaceable folks, just self-misguided when erroneously believing that they can go it alone.

So true. The growing gap between what the Bible actually says in its whole and what the JWs teach based on cherry-picked scriptures causes many to wake up.

Transfusion Experience from France
by Bells inlong story short - my in-laws know that i strongly disagree with their blood doctrine.
i received 3rd degree burns as a toddler and without blood, i would have died.
no doubt this is much of the reason that i feel the way i do.. my mil sent me an article, saying that i might find it of interest - in other words, it is an example to 'refute my contradictions about blood transfusions'.

I'd say it's just another JW urban myth. Maybe there is some truth in it, like a child did have EPO, but these stories grow with the telling.

I won't say I didn't benefit from studying with JWs. I learned personal discipline and good moral values. Even now that I've left, I am benefitted by good discipline habits.
Shame it came at such a high cost.

Question for believers.
by zound inthis thread is not to try and prove which position is true or false, but i wanted to ask a question to believers.
i'll prelude the question with some examples.. jw's think that their message is true and benificial to others - therefore they knock on doors and informal witness etc.
i think it's safe to say most on this forum agree it is not true and it is in fact harmful (particularly to children) perhaps harmful in ways that the jw is not in a position to appreciate because of his/her warped perspective on things.. on the other hand - if their message was true, and armageddon is coming etc etc, then you could argue that them preaching this stuff is not harmful (actually its morally ambiguous but nevermind that for the time being) because the ends justifies the means - it all comes out in the wash etc.. in turn if mormons message was false then we can agree they are misleading, lying, wasting peoples precious time and lives and ultimately harming children and susceptable people by spreading it.

Yes, in the same way bad health information can harm people if they take it up. A few years ago these people went around telling people that having more oxygen was good for you, and gained a following of people having it injected into their veins. It turned out to be false information and people got hurt. I think it's one thing to discuss what you believe; indeed even as a JW I came from the angle of, "this is what I believe about XYZ, what do you believe?" at the doors, but it's another to push it onto people.
